My husband and I were discussing what we could do to keep us active without being boring. I had been the type of person to walk everywhere until life was too busy to do so. Then when life sped up I took up running. I would run four or five mornings a week and loved the feeling of pounding the pavement. Eventually I met my current husband who did not run. I found it harder and harder to get myself up at five each morning to run when he was at home. Eventually I gave up running and the weight crept on.

When the honeymoon period settled down we decided to go to gym together. After less than a year I was bored beyond belief and looking for reasons not to go. I needed to get outside. While I loved the idea of my husband running with me, I knew it would not happen. I went on some small runs with a girl who I met online but struggled to get myself fit enough again. My body was just not up for it after such a big break. I had to admit that I didn’t have the drive to get myself going again.

I tried yoga, even completing my teaching course. I taught for a year and now only practice for myself. I tried boxing, water running, water aerobics, body combat and personal training. Nothing was enough to keep me interested.

I was chatting to a friend one day saying I was bored with everything and I wanted to get outside. Knowing I could not run anymore she introduced me to her neighbour who had the cycling bug. It didn’t take me long to also feel the pull to the saddle.

It was last September when I had sort of a reality check and realized that I was not in my best shape physically. For years I have been stuck in office jobs where I usually spend at least eight hours sitting at a desk in front of a computer monitor all day. Over time, this had started taking a toll on me as I noticed I was not as physically active as I should be and that I had started to gain weight.

So I decided that some action needed to be taken before this got out of hand. I would usually be involved in various forms of exercise including mountain biking and hitting the gym in my spare time. But this was not enough; I needed to be active everyday but time was so limited that I could not even squeeze in a couple minutes per day towards exercise on my schedule.

At last, I found a solution; biking to and from work every day. So, I went to a bike shop in the market and got me a new bike specifically to be used for commuting. The bike bought was one of those cheap bikes, nothing too special or from any of the top mountain bike brands. The bike I got also came fully equipped with gears but you can use a single speed mountain bike if you choose to. And the great thing is I got this bike for below $200.

The lack of confidence is a great deterrent to achieving goals and chances for improvements in health, fitness, skill, and fun. The good news is, confidence can be developed and achieved.

Have the proper mindset. It is just a matter of attitude. Having a strong belief that you can improve your fitness, skills and overall ability in riding a bicycle through practice and training gives you a positive outlook and consequently, gives you purpose, drive and direction.
